SATURDAY RECAP OF NFL PLAYOFFS

SATURDAY RECAP OF NFL PLAYOFFS

Well I can say if you look at my earlier picks I am 2-0 so far eventhough my point prediction in the Patriots game was off.  Seahawks dominated the game against the Saints as I expected.  I observed something from a few Saints defensive backs I didn’t like though.  Yes I know Harvin had not played for awhile and he wasn’t in great game shape but I think some of the hits he got were sinister in nature.

Seattle home crowd were great and didn’t mind braving the rain to give them awesome support and help disrupt the Saints offence. Sean Payton is a great coach but so is Pete Carroll and although Payton’s gameplan was good, Seattle’s defense was better.  Russell Wilson played OK he did not do anything particularly special but he didn’t make any costly mistakes.  Marshawn Lynch seemed to be the hero again in another game against the Saints.  The Saints D put on a pretty decent show but Lynch was definitely in Beastmode again.  Losing the division and homefield advantage to Carolina caused the Saints to have an early exit to the playoffs.

Moving on to the Patriots and the Colts.  This game displayed how great Andrew Luck is in only his second year.  He delivered pin point accurate throws down the field for big plays.  He was able to escape alot of the pressure that was on him in the pocket.  He was able to keep the Colts in the game a few times when the Patriots seemed to be on the verge of pulling away.  That aside he still showed signs of a 2nd year player by throwing multiple interceptions this week but unlike last week he was against a team that wouldn’t give up a big lead.  The odds were against the Colts this week because first off they were playing in Gillette Stadium which is a very tough place to play. They were also playing against Bill Bilicheck after he had a week off to make a game plan.  They were playing Tom Brady who I believe is having a MVP type season considering his limited receivers. The pats did something unexpected though; they ran the ball….ALOT.  6 Touchdowns rushing to be exact and none passing for Brady.  This game was more than a win it was a message to their next opponent.  This is something to confuse them so they really don’t know if they should plan for the pass or the run.

Aside

DIVISIONAL

THE DIVISIONAL ROUND PLAYOFFS

Chargers and the Broncos

Let’s start off with the Chargers and the Broncos.  Peyton Manning is one of the best QB’s ever if not the best.  His only critisicm is that he can’t play in cold and he is not as great in the playoffs.  The cold itself may not be a factor maybe it’s just playing away from home that might be a little difficult for him.  The reality of it all is that Peyton isnt completely to blame for when his teams failed in playoffs past.  Teams in the playoffs make their defensive schemes to take away Manning and the rest of the team does not step up that is why they lose.  Denver is a team that has alot of pressure on it.  It is not one of them teams that sees going to the playoffs as an accomplishment; they are built to win now and anything short of at least a Superbowl appearance is not accepatble.  Philip Rivers is an amazing QB and the Chargers are playing with house money.  These guys with skill and alot of luck got into the playoffs so it is an exciting ride and I don’t think it will end this week.  It will be a very close game it could be a shootout but the Chargers will find a way to pull it out because these teams see each other twice a year.

CHARGERS 34 BRONCOS 31

Colts and Patriots

The matchup that most people would love is if Broncos won and Colts won this week so that the AFC Championship would be Luck against his predecessor Manning.  Sorry to say that won’t happen this year.  The Patriots will win this one.  Andrew Luck showed us last week that in his second year he is even better than we thought.  They proved to be a team that despite losing a big piece in Reggie Wayne; they came together and steped up to the occasion.  This game will definitely be close and despite the power of both offences it may be relatively low scoring.  This year Brady is playing lights out and no the stats are not there to prove that.  They have lost Gronk, Hernandez and Welker which were Brady main targets and Brady was still able to get 12 wins.  With a week off to prepare expect Belicheck and Brady to be ready to win.

PATS 27 COLTS 20

Panthers and 49ers

The Panthers deserve alot of praise for turning around their season after starting slow they finished very strong.  Cam Newton has matured through this season and is showing why he is a superstar.  They have a great running game and dominate the line of scrimage.  Their defence is one of the best in the league. They however will not win this game they have no chance.  These teams have played earlier this year and Carolina came out with the win.  This time the 49ers will come out with the victory.  These teams are known for the same things.  They all run the ball well, have QB’s who are athletic, great defences and can dominate the clock.  The difference in this is Michael Crabtree.  This one man changes 49ers from an average offence to a very good one.  Their passing game will be the key and Carolina only has Steve Smith who is a real receiver. San Fran had Boldin and davis all year but that 3rd  reciever will be a big impact.

49ERS 24  PANTHERS 13

Saints and Seahawks

Sean Payton is an amazing coach and showed last week that the Saints can pull off a win on the road in the playoffs.  He will be doing things to try and simulate the envirnoment they will be in this week in Seattle.  Truth is though the Saints defence has lost some key people on defence and despite Rob Ryan being a good defensive coordinator they won’t be able to hold Seattle in check.  Seattle does not have an amazing passing offence but their great running game allow for a decent pass game.  Drew Brees will have a difficult night against this amazing defence seeing that the Eagles defence made it hard for him.  Seattle’s defence will show up in a big way in this game and help Seattle to make it to next week to face San Fran.

WHY LUCK GOT LUCKY AND NICK FOLDED?

Image

Saturday Wildcard football was indeed wild and was probably not what someone who bets on football would like.  The two games combined was a deficit of 3 points.

Lets start off with Indy which showed a hell of a lot of heart.  In the first half of the season Indy was a darkhorse to the superbowl.  Times have changed and no they will not make it this year but they played a game of the ages.  This first off put to bed any doubt from last year that RG3 should have been the first pick.  Luck is great and he has no quit in him.  KUDOS also goes to the coach who after being down by 28 still had his players feeling that they could win.  Now that is out of the way lets get to the real reason why the Chiefs lost.   In an earlier post I picked them to win and really they should have but in all honesty it seemed that they were cursed.  The injury monster was out in full force and seemed to take all prisoners except Alex Smith and Andy Reid.  Lets give a shout out to Smith first off who played a Hell of a game and showed he is one of the better QB’s in the NFL.  I will go as far as to say with him instead of Kapernick SF may have Won the Superbowl.  You have to also see that Andy Reid did an amazing job in turning around the team and getting them into the playoffs. Jamaal Charles is one of the best running backs in the league and they key to the Chiefs offence.  He left the game early with a concussion and that may have sealed their fate because he was their main way to control the ball and time of possesion.  The loss of Flowers their best CB and Avery a very fast receiver really contributed to their late game collapse.

The Philly and Saints game despite how powerful both offences were seemed relatively low scoring.  Drew Brees was off target for alot of the game not really connecting as he usually does.  The already beaten up Saints secondary lost probably their best remaining CB to a possible concussion.  This loss was quickly taken advantage of by the Eagles defence.  Before this however my theory on Nick Foles held true.  Teams before the year started only really had game tape on Vick and his tendencies etc.  They had very little to go on when it came to Foles that led to his success.  Foles is not a bad QB but he is not great.  The NFL is a league of adjustment and next year Foles will have a hard time achieving the success he did this year.  First off he is not a tested QB they barely pulled out a victory against the Cowboys with a backup QB.  He also only offers a pocket presence and has no ability to run which makes him one dimensional and eventually teams will be able to prepare better for him.

NFC WILDCARD WEEKEND BREAKDOWN

wildcard

NFC WILDCARD WEEKEND BREAKDOWN

Let me start by saying I was kind of disapointed because my Dolphins choked and didn’t make it but I am an NFL fan so i will still enjoy this wildcard weekend.

We should begin in the AFC.

CHIEFS AT COLTS

These are two teams despite their record who kind of limped into the playoffs when compared to their start. Indy’s realized that the loss of reggie wayne was a pretty big one. Andrew luck is still a pretty impressive quarterback that helped them survive a pretty weak AFC South. The Chiefs on the other hand was a defensive juggernaut for most of the begining of the year. After meeting Denver for the first game it seemed the defence has collpased and the offence has taking over. The Chiefs don’t have what it takes to win a Superbowl but they do have a better defence than the Colts. This game will either be a low scoring or a shootout no inbetween. The team that wins the rushing yards game will win the game. Both teams except for the Chiefs dwayne Bowe have all average recivers that will not be the key.

My Prediction Cheifs 24 to Colts 17

CHARGERS AT BENGALS

This will be an exciting game all around. Both teams are very aggresive and want to move on badly. The chargers were able to align all the stars with the right teams losing and them winning to advance. A team like this is dangerous they are riding a High and now that they are in pose a real threat to any team. They have a great QB in Philip Rivers and a running back in Ryan Matthews who finally has durability and it living up to his draft expectations. Keenan Allen is an amazing young wide reciever who give them a chance on every throw. Cinicinati has been a playoff team the last few years and had their hopes destroyed by the Texans. This year the Texans are far from the playoffs leaving no obstacles for them. Andy Dalton wants to silence all of the critics who are not sure which side he is on a line between good and bad qb. AJ green should rank in the top 4 of any Wide reciever conversation in the NFL. The Bengals are ready to be great and are unbeaten at home for the year.

Bengals 31 Chargers 21

EAGLES VS SAINTS

The Eagles are playing great ball coming to the end of the season. Shady Mccoy is running over the competition and Nick foles is making it look quite easy at QB. They are supposed to have the top ranked offence in the NFL. They are at home and are playing pretty well. The Saints have been playing well also this year. Late in the season they have tappered off just a little which probably caused them to lose the NFC South to the Panthers. They do not have an elite running back but sprooles is great in the screen game and their passing game opens up the ability for them to run. This will be an offensive shootout in which the Saints have a better defence and the better defensive coordinator. Foles is a good QB but not as good as his numbers are. The truth is many teams spent the year preparing for Vick. Now that the Eagles have Foles there is not much tape on him to really scheme for him during the season. Make no mistake though Payton will have a plan for him in the postseason.

SAINTS 38 EAGLES 31

49ERS AND PACKERS

This is going to be the best game of the wildcard weekend by far. It is the game that has 2 teams in it that have a legitamte Superbowl chance. The Packers have a combination of luck and skill. Aaron Rodgers was out for weeks and they were able to oull out a couple close wins and a tie to win a NFC North that it seems Detroit or Chicago did not want. With rodgers and randall cobb back the packers have a big boost in offence. They have always had Jordy nelson and james jones and a few young recivers have made this offence very dangerous. Eddie Lacy is an animal and the RB that Rodgers never had. He gives them the ability for a dual threat offence. Their defence however is not very good and will depend on the offence to win this game. The 49ers have an amazing defence. They hold their opponents to low scores alot of times. Kapernick has been a disapointment this year when compared to last year. This year his problem has been teams have already found schemes that work against him and his offensive weapons were limited. Just in time Crabtree is back and he is an amazing reciver that can really open up the offence. With frank gore managing the clock with his tough running and coach’s innovative plays the 49ers will pull it out in a close 1.
